Conspirator is a court room period drama based on a little known true story starring James McAvoy and directed by Hollywood legend Robert Redford.

McAvoy plays lawyer Frederick Aiken who has to defend Mary Surrat, the only woman charged with conspiracy in the assassination of Abraham Lincoln.

Robert Redford told STV’s Grant Laughlin: “What has always interested me is what is the story behind the story you think you know, the story within a story, and that’s what this had.

“It’s really about a mother’s love for her son because her sacrifice for herself and her stubbornness and her feistiness really has to do with protecting her son. That interested me, the emotionality of that.

“It’s the story I wanted to tell in the way I wanted to tell it.”

Other stars in the movie include Kevin Kline, Evan Rachel Wood and Robin Wright.
