The new sequel to Julie Delpy’s well received Two Days in Paris may be set in the Big Apple, but co-star Chris Rock has said he was still the ‘outsider’ with a large French contingent to the cast and crew.
Set five years after Two Days in Paris, Two Days in New York" is set Stateside, where Julie Delpy's character Marion is living with her new boyfriend (played by Chris Rock), their cat and two young children from previous relationships.
However, their cozy existence is shattered when Marion's father, oversexed sister and the sister's outrageous boyfriend come to stay.
Delpy's French father and friends all had parts in the movie. Rock laughed of the atmosphere on set: "l was the outsider, in every sense of the word.
"They all spoke French, and they all have a smoking break and blow smoke in my face and talk French, and the cameraman was French and everything was French."
Playing along, Delpy confirmed: "We didn't speak to him at all.”
"I didn't know what they were talking about, ever," admitted Rock.
"Not at all, even when I had scenes with her father, someone's job is to cue me that he is done speaking because I didn't really understand what he was saying so...'I guess he's stopped, now let me say my line...'"
Despite the language barrier, Albert Delpy was more than comfortable to strip off for a two-man sauna scene with Rock.
Rock said: "It is a lot of fun when you're out there looking at an old man's ass.”
"I think you were really uncomfortable," laughed Delpy. "My dad is very comfortable with his own body. Naked on stage in the sixties and seventies and eighties and nineties...so yeah."
- Two Days in New York opens in the UK on May 18.
