It’s news that fans of the 80s class have been after, and now a movie executive has confirmed that a follow-up to Top Gun is officially in development – with Tom Cruise firmly in the cockpit.
Rumours about the sequel have been building in the past year, with continued affection for the 1986 film which was directed by Tony Scott.
Now, in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Paramount executive Adam Goodman has confirmed that Top Gun 2 is in pre-production.
When asked about making a new Mission Impossible film, he said: “We'll likely make a Top Gun sequel with Tom Cruise first.
“Jerry Bruckheimer would produce, with Tony Scott returning to direct. All parties are moving ahead. We've hired Peter Craig to write the script.”
Peter Craig wrote the highly rated script for The Town – and has been working on a script for Bad Boys III – while the return of Bruckheimer was widely anticipated.
Top Gun also starred Kelly McGillis, Val Kilmer and Anthony Edwards – it’s unclear as yet which of the original film’s cast will return, though Kilmer has expressed interest in the past.
