The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists is a swashbuckling delight

By Aardman Animations, the film sees Pirate Captain setting out on a dangerous mission to defeat his rivals Black Bellamy and Cutlass Liz for the Pirate of the year Award.

Moviejuice presenter Grant Lauchlan was joined in the studio for the reviews by radio presenter Janice Forsyth and Scottish screenwriter Sergio Casci.

Grant started off: “The Pirates! in an Adventure with Scientists – is it an oh-arrr, or an oh-no?”

Janice answered: “It’s somewhere in the middle. I really enjoyed it.

“Again, I thought it was slightly too long, but not once did I think about Hugh Grant or David Tennant doing the voices.

“I just thought of them as brilliant Aardman Animation characters in their own right.”

Grant said that Hugh knows how to do comedy, and Sergio agreed: “Because of all the tabloid nonsense that we’ve had about Hugh Grant, you forget that he’s actually a really fine actor.

“The thing I like best about his performance in this is that he really just seemed to be enjoying himself. I was really impressed by him.”

Grant didn’t think it was quite as sharp and witty as Wallace and Gromit, but that it was still hugely entertaining.

For marks out of five, Grant gave it three and a half “shiny gold doubloons“, Janice gave it four, as did Sergio. The movie hits cinemas on Wednesday.
