Is The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel worth the trip?

With an all-star cast including Judi Dench, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson and Maggie Smith, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel concerns a group of British retirees travelling to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel.

Presenter Grant Lauchlan was joined in the Moviejuice studios for this week’s reviews by film critics Siobhan Synnot and Alistair Harkness.

Grant admitted that he went into the film with a huge amount of trepidation.

He explained: “I thought ooh, it’s going to be Carry On Pensioners, with ancient gags. There were some ancient gags, but I was bowled over by it. It really charmed me.”

Siobhan agreed: “There were ancient gags, some of them were older than the Ganges. But I liked this for being a movie that knows what it is.

“It’s not for the Club 18-30 crowd – it’s comfort food.”

However, it didn’t sit well with everyone. Alistair said: “My problem with it is it starts treating the audience in a very condescending way by having this very broad comedy as if older audiences can’t handle something a bit more sophisticated.”

Grant reasoned: “At the end of the day, if you just wanting a good Friday night, Saturday night film, take your gran, take your mum to go see it – this is the film for you.”

However, Siobhan added: “I feel they deserved better. I think that they jokes could be less old and the plot arcs could be a little less predictable.”

So what did they give the movie out of five? Tune into Moviejuice tonight at 8pm to find out – and we’ll also have extended reviews online after the show.
