Travellers at Glasgow Airport have been treated to an unexpected dance routine paying tribute to the legendary Gene Kelly, who is the subject of a retrospective at the Glasgow Film Festival which begins tomorrow.
The flashmob, which was provided by Dance Glasgow, entertained passengers yesterday morning with a version of the legendary Singin’ in the Rain dance, which made Kelly an icon.
The late Gene Kelly was acclaimed as one of the greatest all-round talents ever to tap-dance his way across the silver screen, leaving an indelible impression as an actor, director and choreographer.
Allan Hunter, co-director of Glasgow Film Festival, said: "The Gene Kelly retrospective is full of joyous Hollywood classics that are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.
“The Singin' In The Rain flash mob at Glasgow Airport did a brilliantly creative job of celebrating Gene Kelly, focusing attention on the Glasgow Film Festival and entertaining everyone who saw it.”
He added: “They certainly proved that Glasgow is all about cinema-going with style. Where will they strike next?"
Andi Deny, marketing assistant at Glasgow Film Festival and one of the dancers in the flashmob, said: "We only had three or four rehearsals and we were really quite pleased with how it went.
"We were worried at first as there wasn’t a lot of people in the airport but it got busier and people were gathered round us and taking pictures.
"We were in the airport for quite a while so I think the staff knew about us but the passengers were quite surprised. There was a lot of smiles on faces, it was great."
Kelly can be seen during Glasgow Film Festival in all-time classics such asAnchors Aweigh (1945), The Pirate (1948), Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949), On the Town (1949), An American in Paris (1951), Singin’ in the Rain (1952), Brigadoon (1954) and Hello, Dolly (1969) from 18th to 26th February.
Steven Marshall, commercial marketing manager at Glasgow Airport, said: “Glasgow Airport is thrilled to partner with Glasgow Film Festival again – we appreciate that this event helps put Glasgow city on the international map.”
