The gong show: all the awards winners at last night's Baftas Pic: BAFTA/Rex Features
The stars of The Artist were anything but silent as the film was one of the main winners at last night’s Bafta Awards in London with seven awards, alongside Meryl Streep and John Hurt who received a special tribute.
The Artist, which looks back at the era of silent movies, swept away all in front of it with its awards haul, including for best film, best director, best original screenplay, original music, best costume design and best cinematography.
Jean Dujardin also won for best actor – beating out British favourite Gary Oldman in the process.
Meanwhile Meryl Streep took best actress as expected for her riveting turn in The Iron Lady. It was just her second lead actress Bafta win after The French Lieutenant's Woman – which came more than 30 years ago.
There was no win for Scottish director Lynne Ramsay, who was nominated for Best Director for We Need to Talk About Kevin.
