Moviejuice’s Grant whizzes through the big stories from the nominations for this year’s Oscars. He rounds up the big hitters and reveals why everyone is talking about who didn’t get a nomination.
The big story this year is Hugo – Martin Scorsese story of a boy who lives alone in a Paris railway station – that has been nominated for 11 Academy Awards.
Hot on its heels is silent sensation The Artist. A black-and-white film that appears to have taken everyone by surprise and now has 10 nominations.
Its star Jean Dujardin is nominated in the best actor category. He is up against George Clooney for The Descendants, Demian Birchir for A Better Life, Gary Oldman for Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and Brad Pitt for Moneyball.
For the women, Hollywood veteran Meryl Streep is leading the charge for her role as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady. She is the most nominated actress having been up for an award 17 times.
Up against Meryl is Glen Close for Albert Nobbs, Viola Davies for The Help, Rooney Mara for The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo and Michelle Williams for My Week With Marilyn.
A surprise contender is the comedy Bridesmaids which has been nominated for best screenplay and Melissa McCarthy as best supporting actress.
However, the topic on everyone’s lips is about the start that isn’t nominated. Uggie the Jack Russell melted everyone’s hearts for his role as Jack in The Artist.
The Academy Awards does not give prizes to animals, yet there has been a campaign to recognise his achievement.
