The nominations for next month’s 84th Academy Awards have been announced, with The Artist and Hugo leading the way, and Meryl Streep and George Clooney among the nominees.

Oscar 2012 nominations: the full Academy Awards list revealed

The nominations for next month’s 84th Academy Awards have been announced, with The Artist and Hugo leading the way, and Meryl Streep and George Clooney among the nominees.

Meryl Streep is considered favourite for Best Actress for her role as former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, while George Clooney is among the frontrunners in the Best Actor category for The Descendents.

The Artist, a French tribute to silent movies set in Hollywood, is nominated for both Best Picture and Original Screenplay, with its leading man Jean Dujardin also up for Best Actor.

In total it has 10 nominations, while Martin Scorsese's Hugo has 11.

The Academy Awards take place on Sunday 26th February at the Kodak Theatre, Hollywood, presented by Billy Crystal.

The list is as follows:
