Ahead of Moviejuice’s first episode of the year tonight at 8pm on STV, Grant Lauchlan guides us through the must-see films of the year.

There’s loads to choose from, but we’ve managed to whittle it down to a selection of those that are likely to be box office blockbusters in 2012. Without further ado, here we are:

  • The Avengers – The summer blockbuster season begins in April, and this eagerly anticipated movie features a host of Marvel comic superheroes, including Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor and Captain America.
  • The Dictator – Sacha Baron Cohen – star of Borat and Bruno – serves us with a dictator to die laughing at.
  • Men in Black III – Will Smith returns as Agent Jay in May, and has to travel back to the 60s to stop an alien assinating Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent Kay.
  • The Amazing Spider-Man – The blockbusters continue in July. It’s only been 10 years since Tobey Maguire took to the big screen as the webbed wonder, so will the 2012 version with Andrew Garfield shatter the box office records the predecessor enjoyed?
  • The Dark Knight Rises – Also that month Christian Bale reprises his role as Batman. The third instalment in director Christopher Nolan’s series is likely to be his last.
  • Brave – We applaud the genius that is Pixar, the beauty of their movies is their broad appeal. In August we’ll meet the archery-loving Scottish princess set to unleash chaos in their new animated feature.
  • The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – Finally we have practically a whole year to wait for this. The prequel to Lord of the Rings has been split into two films. Martin Freeman will bring us his Bilbo Baggins, and Andy Serkis, Ian McKellen and Christopher Lee all reprise their roles from the previous blockbuster trilogy.
