Next year sees not one but two movies based on Snow White, as rival studios battle it out to have the fairest of them all.
Both offer a twist on the famous fairytale. Perhaps the most immediately interesting is Snow White and the Huntsman, given that it stars Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Thor’s Chris Hemsworth. (And is it just us or is the hunky Hemsworth sporting a Scottish accent?)
However, the star of the trailer above is undoubtedly Charlize Theron as Queen Ravenna, whose eyes are very firmly set on capturing the soul of Kristen’s Snow White.
Directed by Rupert Sanders, the tale has been turned into an action epic closer to Lord of the Rings than the Disney movies, there’s already been talk of a trilogy. There’s also an amazing array of British actors playing the dwarves including Ray Winstone, Nick Frost, Ian McShane and Bob Hoskins, though their appearance isn’t revealed in the trailer. Snow White and the Huntsman comes out on June 1.
Mirror Mirror is being directed by Tarsem Singh, who helmed recent hit Immortals and is known for his startling visuals, meaning the movie should be something of a feast for the eyes. Lily Collins stars as Snow White – the UK actress is definitely less known than Kristen at the moment, but that may be all set to change.
Mirror Mirror seems a more decidedly family friendly movie, with more jokes – many at the expense of the dwarves who feature in the trailer. All eyes will be on Julia Roberts as the Evil Queen, while The Social Network’s Armie Hammer stars as Prince Andrew Alcott and Sean Bean – no stranger to fantasy epics – playing the King.
This movie feels slightly closer to the Snow White we all know and love, but audiences may prefer the grittier take that Kristen and Chris will be offering up.
So, which will be the more successful? Ah, if only we had a mirror to give us a proper prediction...
