Kevin Smith has described new movie Red State as being a return to independent cinema, 17 years after making Clerks.
He told STV that his breakthrough hit in 1994 had taken off so quickly that he never felt he promoted his film like an independent filmmaker and new movie Red State has given him the opportunity to complete his education.
By taking the film outside the studio system, Smith says he is able to connect with his audience directly, touring the film and doing Q&A sessions following each screening.
He explained that , surprisingly, he found it easier to make the film profitable without the marketing muscle offered by Hollywood and that the suupport of a major player could act against a film.
With Red State being his penultimate film as a director, he revealed that after making hockey movie Hit Somebody, he would be looking to support up and coming filmmakers. Taking Red State on the road to learn promotion the hard way would give him the experience to those who want to follow in his footsteps.
