Anne Hathaway explained to STV’s Grant Lauchlan that she feels alienated by the superficial elements of Hollywood society. Unsurprisingly, she relates well to Emma, her character in One Day.
“I don’t understand these people who come out of the womb with their tans and their fashion sense, and their inability to grow leg hair. I would not be interested in glamour or anything like that if my job hadn’t introduced me to it. I really loved Emma’s look in the movie, it reminded me a lot of when I was growing up, that’s the way people looked.”
The Hollywood star thinks One Day manages to avoid the clichés that romance movies often deploy, whilst also dealing honestly with the complexity of human relationships. She had a stern warning for those contemplating using the film to woo a potential partner:
“This is a movie that really explores what’s important in life, and it’s not an easy film. It’s challenging…. it’s not a first date movie. You should go with someone you love.”
Hathaway praised David Nicholls, who adapted the screenplay from his book of the same name.
“I read the book and it was so much nicer to get to go even deeper with the characters. David’s so clever and there’s so many details and observations in the movie that you just look at and go ‘oh my god, I’m this person, how did you know that?’”
The actress attempted the difficult task of summarising One Day for STV:
“It’s a story about growth, and growing up, and growing up with someone and growing up for yourself, and it’s also told with such humour. But, I think that it’s a story that’s very courageous in saying that there is true love out there, and life is tenuous, and it says it in a way that doesn’t make you cringe or feel sappy.”
One Day is in cinemas now.
