Edinburgh International Film Festival to return to August slot?

The Guard: film opened 2011 festival and starred Brendan Gleeson

A statement from those behind the Edinburgh International Film Festival reveals that they’re mulling over a change from its current June slot, with many having called for the festival to move back to August.

EIFF drew fire last month for a ‘reboot’ which appeared to fail in terms of attracting a broader audience, with critics calling the programme a “straight-to-video flop”. It opened with The Guard, and took place from June 15 to 26.

The Centre for the Moving Image – the organisation that now controls the festival – has subsequently advertised the post of artistic director, which James Mullighan had held this year and is expected to reapply for.

It appears that the CMI is also keen to bear in mind the criticism and other constructive commentary which greeted EIFF 2011 as it looks to strengthen its efforts.

EIFF moved from August to June in 2008, and some believe the shift away from the other Edinburgh festivals has damaged its capabilities to attract both star names and potential audience members. However, the festival’s reduced funding might hamper a move back to August.

The statement on behalf of the board and staff of the CMI reads as follows:

“In advance of a full review of this year’s event, the CMI team wishes to confirm the following:

  • The Edinburgh International Film Festival is a major cinephile festival; the programme of EIFF 2012 will reflect the Festival's 65year-long commitment to celebrating the art of film making.
  • The Michael Powell Award is a major asset of the EIFF and, after our unique 65th birthday celebrations, we will continue our tradition of recognising and rewarding excellence with this award.
  • Feedback on EIFF 2011 will be taken into consideration in our planning for future Festivals.
  • Industry views regarding the dates of the festival are being taken into consideration and a decision will be made in due course.

No further comment will be made on these points at this stage.”

The CMI was founded last year with a vision to be the lead agency for film and the moving image in Scotland. The CMI currently comprises EIFF, Edinburgh Filmhouse and Edinburgh Film Guild. The Michael Powell Award is awarded for Best New British Feature Film, and is named after the renowned British film director.
