Zombie Nation: A-listers sign up for Scotland-based horror movies

In the zombie zone: Scotland top location for horror genre

It has been a zombie-tastic week for Scotland after the country was announced as a shooting location for two star-studded zombie movies.

Brad Pitt, Dame Judi Dench and Sir Ian McKellen are just some of the A-listers being tipped to star in the feature films The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet and World War Z.

The idyllic town of Culross on the Fife Coast was selected as a top choice for co-writer and director Matthew Butler for the film The Curse of the Buxom Stumpet featuring Dame Judi Dench, Sir Ian McKellen, Gillan Anderson and Mark Williams.

The old buildings and cobbled streets create a fascinating time-warp feel to the seaside town.

It’s not exactly the first location that comes to mind when thinking of walking dead monsters or warped beings trapped by some unexplainable illnesses.

Despite this, Butler was charmed by the Scottish town and believes it will be the perfect place to shoot the 18th century film later this year.

He said: “Culross and the surrounding areas are just perfect and add to that slightly fairytale feel of the film.”

Also on the cards for a possible zombie makeover is Glasgow. Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment production company and Paramount Pictures are said to considering the bustling Scottish city as the location for their new blockbuster movie World War Z.

It is hoped that the city will be transformed into a war-torn ruin that will double as US city Philadelphia as places like St Vincent Street are used to create the effect of an American city centre.

Trailer of E'gad, Zombies! - the short film The Curse of the Buxom Strumpet is based upon:

This is not the first time Scottish soil has been used as a location for these horror/zombie creations. Scottish success Outpost used locations such as Dalbeattie, Castle Douglas and Govan to create the thriller.

It seems that Scotland really does have that all important spooky edge…
