Gemma Arterton didn't want to play the lead role in 'Tamara Drewe'.

The 24-year-old actress confesses she didn't like the character of Tamara - a journalist who is forced to return to her hometown in rural England after her mother dies - because she's "lost".

Speaking on the red carpet of the movie at London's Odeon Cinema, Leicester Square, Gemma said: "I didn't actually want to play Tamara when I first read it because I didn't like her.

"She's a femme fatale but she's really lost, she's desperate, she's a very modern woman. I know a lot of women like Tamara Drewe.

"It's good to play people that you don't understand originally because you have to work why they do the things that they do."

However, the film's director Stephen Frears - best known for his work on Oscar-winning movie 'The Queen' - is clearer about why he wanted to work on the film.

He told BANG Showbiz: "It's got good humour and sex!"

'Tamara Drewe' - which also stars Dominic Cooper and Tamsin Grieg - is released worldwide throughout September and October.
