Rachel McAdams and Olga Kuryienko discuss Terrence Mallick’s To the Wonder

Rachel McAdams and Olga Kuryienko walked the red carpet at the Toronto International Film Festival in support of their highly anticipated new film To the Wonder.

Written and directed by Terrence Mallick, it's his second film in two years. Before this one, he's directed five feature films in a career spanning 42 years.

Last year, his highly acclaimed Tree of Life won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival.

To the Wonder stars McAdam, Kurlenko, Ben Affleck, and Javier Bardem – and while none of the guys showed up, both ladies walked the red carpet and touted the virtues of their director.

For McAdams working with Mallick was dream come true. She said: “I think he's one of the best out there, and I love his voice, so to be able to be a part of that - and like you said he doesn't make that many movies - it just still blows my mind.”

Working with the iconic director went beyond her expectations.

"Where to begin?” she pondered. “You know he's very good at setting a scene where you feel - you'll be out in a field filled with wild horses or wild bison - he sets you in these extraordinary circumstances.”

"And then he doesn't ask you to pretend or pander to the camera or do anything that doesn't feel real. And then he just tries to catch it. You know like catching butterflies or catching lightening in a jar, and he's so good at that and he's so discerning about what is real and what feels honest and what isn't, so you can always guarantee that you're not going to look foolish. So you can do anything and he will protect you.”

She added: That's just the icing on the cake, there's lot of other things. He's one of the nicest men too, I ever met. He's such a great heart and I think he sees what's beautiful in the world, whether it's positive or negative, you know, he enjoys what's beautiful about all of it."

Bond girl Kurylenko admired the trust he builds in his actors: "He just fills you up. You become the character. You live it 24/7.

“In my case, the magic was that I wasn't afraid to do anything for him. I wasn't - I never said, 'What is this, this is crazy? I'm not going to do that.' I was up for anything that he asked me because I trusted him 100%.”
