Dragon lady: Is Kristen set to go head to head with Carey for movie role?

Kristen Stewart and Oscar and Golden Globe nominated British actress Carey Mulligan are said to be vying with each other for the lead in Fight Club director David Fincher’s remake of Sweish thriller, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, according to reports.

A source told The Sun: “It's an edgy, sexy, demanding role which would have been perfect for Angelina Jolie - if she was only ten years younger.

"So the very best twentysomething actresses around today are in the frame - and that's a very short list."

Both actresses have good reasons to be considered front runners to play Fincher’s leading lady, punk, antisocial, bisexual computer hacker, Lisbeth Salander.

Last month An Education star Carey admitted that she is “obsessed” with author Stieg Larsson's bestselling Millennium Trilogy, on which the movie will be based, and would love to play Salander in the remake.

Stewart who shot to global fame playing Bella Swan in the Twilight series got her big screen breakthrough playing Jodie Foster’s diabetic daughter in Fincher’s 2002 thriller Panic Room.

Noomi Rapace portrayed the Sander role in the original Swedish adaptation of Dragon Tattoo, which is currently playing in UK cinemas.

Last month Mulligan beat out competition from Kiera Knightley and Natalie Portman to land the role of Eliza Dolittle in the upcoming remake of My Fair Lady written by Emma Thompson and is considered one of the hottest properties in Hollywood.

Stewart, who recently picked up the Rising Star BAFTA award, has already demonstrated her desire to cast her net wider than Twilight and recently earned rave reviews for her portrayal of rocker Joan Jett in biopic, The Runaways.

The Millenium- series, which was published posthumously after Swedish writer and journalist Larsson’s death from a heart attack aged 50, has sold more than 27 million copies worldwide.

Larsson said he conceived the character of Lisbeth as a reimagined grown up version of Pippi Longstocking.
