Jon Favreau believes the success of 'Iron Man 2' will affect all other Marvel movies.
The director says the film, which stars Robert Downey Jr. as the titular character, needs to be well received for other comic book movies - including 'Spider-Man 4' and 'Captain America' - to make sense.
He said: "If I don't do a good job with this one it jeopardises all future films in the collective Marvel universe.
"'Iron Man' was the first film to establish the tone of the world. Since Marvel have committed to make the universe, 'Iron Man 2' does have a ripple effect into the other movies."
Jon noted his decision to have fictional World War II action hero Nick Fury appear during the ending credits of 'Iron Man' led to a big Hollywood deal.
He told Total Film: "When I decided to have Nick Fury after the credits in 'Iron Man', that Easter egg scene turned into a nine-picture deal for Samuel L. Jackson. So these little impulsive decisions that are based on a creative whim have ramifications that affect the entire set of franchises."
Other movies which could be affected by the success of 'Iron Man 2' include 'Thor', 'The Avengers' and 'S.H.I.E.L.D'.
'Iron Man 2' - which features Downey Jr., Mickey Rourke, Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell - is released worldwide in April and May.
