Toni Collette doesn't want to play "feckless handbag" characters.
The 37-year-old actress - who has played quirky roles such as Sheryl Hoover in 'Little Miss Sunshine' and Muriel Heslop in 'Muriel's Wedding' - prefers meatier parts based on her ability as an actress rather than vapid roles which are given to beautiful female stars.
She said: "My career has never been based on how I look, and I don't want it to be. I like my work, like my life, to be much deeper than that - that's something I've managed to escape. I think it's a dangerous pressure.
"I would rather play somebody complex and rich and real than some feckless handbag."
The Australian star - who currently appears in Golden Globe-nominated TV series 'United States of Tara', in which she plays the titular character, a woman who suffers from dissociative identity disorder - is proud of her back catalogue of work.
She said: "I appreciate the variety. I've always followed my gut and luckily landed on my feet."
However, the Oscar-nominated actress admits she is not being deluged with new opportunities.
She told the USA Today newspaper: "Even if there were offers flooding in, there would probably be maybe only one thing I'd love to do. It needs to be of a certain quality at this point.
"I really would like to work with people who can inspire me, which is greedy, I know."
