Hobbit forming: James McAvoy has been tipped for the part

Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in the trilogy, said McAvoy would be fantastic in the part of key character, his uncle, Bilbo.

Speaking to MTV, he said: “I'm a fan of his work and I think he's the right age and I think that he has a quality to him that could fit quite nicely with what Ian Holm did in the first movie.”

The release of The Hobbit, directed by Guillermo del Toro of Pan’s Labyrinth fame, has been delayed until 2012.

Atonement award winner McAvoy will have plenty on his plate before then, however, as his actress wife Anne-Marie Duff has just announced she is expecting a baby in July.

The Lord of the Rings series of epic live-action films by Peter Jackson brought the novels of J R R Tolkein to life between 2001 and 2003.

Action in The Hobbit predates the trilogy, but many of the charactors are the same.
