In his new show Spirit Comedium, Ian D Montfort is attempting to channel the positive atmosphere of the Edinburgh Festival into his performances. He explained to STV:
“[There’s] a lot of tenderness coming through each night, a lot of people making connections with the other side, and I’m just happy to be a tool…..making that happen”
Montfort is the creation of comedian Tom Binns, but it is difficult to draw the line between reality and creation in his act. His mind tricks are often hilariously bad, yet at the same time have the potential to be brilliantly accurate. He explained the difference between his shows and those performed by other mediums:
“Other mediums, they have messages coming through for you, from people that you knew. Now, I have messages coming through for you from people that you didn’t know. The great thing about that is that you don’t need to be recently bereaved, so have a smashing time at my show!”
The uniqueness of Montfort’s shows has won him plaudits in the past. He was previously nominated for both the Edinburgh Comedy Award, as well as the Chortle award in 2011. His mixture of the supernatural and the funny seems to be striking a chord with audiences across the world.
Montfort demonstrated his spiritual skills for STV, and the result was occasionally correct, though more often than not side-splitting. His insight included phenomenal revelations like “am I right in saying you did not buy luggage and baggage at the airport?”, for example. On the other hand, he did manage to accurately guess that our interviewer had been to Las Vegas on his last holiday. Spooky.
Montfort toes the line between a parody or, alternatively, a real medium who has cunningly decided to inject humour into his shows. We recommend you go along and decide for yourself. Spirit Comedium runs from the 23rd to the 28th of August at the Pleasance Courtyard. More information and ticket details can be found at the Edinburgh Festival website.
