British comedian Carey Marx must be feeling quite pleased with himself. As well as winning the Best Show Award for the second time at the New Zealand Comedy Festival recently, the funnyman has been wowing audiences and critics alike at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe with his darkly comedic and controversial stand-up show.
Carey has been an Edinburgh Festival regular since 2003 and was planning to take a break this year, but his wife managed to change his mind. Speaking to STV he explained:
“In the past I’ve written some quite specific titles where I’ve had to do an awful lot of work to write a show into that title, but my plan this year was not to come to Edinburgh.
“I’ve done seven shows and I figured it was a good year to take a break, and then my wife decided to do Edinburgh so I thought I would come up just to visit her anyway, and if I’m going to be here anyway then I may as well do a show.”
Carey is a regular at comedy clubs throughout the UK and can often be found compering at the Reading, Leeds and Glastonbury festivals. The talented comedian has also appeared on TV shows The Slam and The Stand Up Show and has written two books.
Although he enjoys what he does for a living, Carey openly admitted that he is always striving to improve himself in the name of comedy. He said:
“My work is always work in progress and I’ve taken the last two shows to the other side of the world and they build and become something else, and the theme at the moment is all about laziness and stuff.
“I’ve been in the business now for 15 years and it’s my eighth hour of comedy in Britain, and I’m just beginning to wonder if anyone is really listening to anything I’m saying. You don’t get constant reward for what you do and I think we all go through periods of our work why we wonder why we bother. It can be very unrewarding work sometimes.”
Carey Marx: Laziness… and Stuff will be showing at Edinburgh’s Gilded Balloon Teviot at 10.15pm until August 28. For more information or to book tickets see the Edinburgh Festival website.
