Talented British stars dominated at this year’s Emmys Awards ceremony in Los Angeles. Dame Maggie Smith picked up an award for her portrayal in Downton Abbey of the grand Dowager Countess of Grantham.

Meanwhile, Damian Lewis was given the best actor in a drama series award for his performance in Homeland.

He beat nominees Bryan Cranston from Breaking Bad and Jon Hamm from Mad Men to the prize.

Lewis said: “I'm one of those pesky Brits, I apologize. I don't really believe in judging art, but I thought I'd show up just in case.”

He plays US Marine Sergeant Nicholas Brody in the military drama.

Julia won the gong for outstanding lead actress in a comedy series for her part in the show which was written by Armando.
